The Generalist

One of the things I love most about my day job at a public library is that I get to see books written about everything under the sun.  I love knowing things.  I have a curiosity about the world that keeps my pile of books constantly too high and tottering next to my reading chair.  And this, I think, will ensure that I’ll always have something to write about.  While I mostly write fiction, all stories need a bit of research so that I can put my characters into places and situations that make sense for them.  And as I read and do research, I can’t help but come across more things that inspire stories.  Writers need to be well read.  There’s no way around that.  In order to keep our well of ideas full, we have to replenish it with experiences and information.

If you have a writer in your life and aren’t sure what to get them for Christmas, give them books.  Gift certificates to book stores or one of the many electronic readers and gift cards for online book purchasing are also good options.  Writers love books or we wouldn’t be writing them.

Enjoy the conclusion to The Sweetest Gift.

Happy holidays everyone.
